The Legacy
Founded in 1981 and reincorporated in 2005, the Las Vegas Chapter of the National Bar Association (LVNBA) began as a bold vision shared by fourteen pioneering attorneys and judges. Today, it stands as a driving force for progress, equity, and leadership within Nevada’s legal community—and its impact continues to grow.
At the time of LVNBA’s founding, fewer than twenty African-American attorneys practiced in the entire state. Today, that number has grown to approximately 125–150—about 1% of the State Bar of Nevada. This progress reflects decades of intentional effort, advocacy, and community support—but the work is far from complete.
LVNBA members are leaders across every facet of the legal profession. They found and lead firms, mentor future attorneys, advocate for justice, shape public policy, and serve at every level of government. Through this work, LVNBA is not only advancing individual careers—it is strengthening the legal pipeline and expanding access to opportunity across Nevada.
As a proud affiliate of the National Bar Association—founded in 1925—the LVNBA is part of a powerful national network dedicated to advancing equity, excellence, and access in the legal profession. Together, we carry forward a legacy built on courage and collective action.
That legacy continues because of the people who invest in it.
Whether you are a legal professional, student, community partner, or supporter, there is a place for you in LVNBA. By becoming a member, volunteering your time, or making a financial contribution, you directly support mentorship programs, scholarships, community initiatives, and the development of future leaders in the law.
The Mission
The six pillars of the LVNBA's Mission are to:
-
Promote education, professionalism, and equal justice under law;
-
Advance the law through scholarship, leadership, and the continued development of the legal profession;
-
Strengthen the fair administration of justice, uphold judicial independence, and protect the rule of law;
-
Foster collaboration and community within the legal profession;
-
Advocate for policies that expand access to opportunity—including healthcare, education, economic advancement, and full participation in our democracy; and
-
Defend and protect the civil and constitutional rights of all people.
The Founders
The LVNBA was originally incorporated in 1981 by a small group of fourteen trailblazing African-American legal pioneers. The original fourteen founding members are: Robert Archie (1941-1996), Andras F. Barbero, B. Jeanie Banks, Marcus Cooper, James Davidson, Michael Allen Davis (1951-2012), David Dean (1934-1986), Booker T. Evans, Judge Addeliar D. Guy, III (1923-1997), James O. Porter, Judge Johnnie B. Rawlinson, Dan Winder, Arthur L. Williams, Jr., and Justice of the Peace Earle W. White, Jr. (1933-2005).
The Presidents
LVNBA presidents are leaders in the Las Vegas legal community and beyond. In addition to serving as LVNBA officers, LVNBA presidents have held offices in numerous other legal and community organizations in Nevada.
