About Us

The mission of the Las Vegas Chapter of the National Bar Association (LVNBA) is to advance the science of jurisprudence and improve the administration of justice. Originally incorporated in 1981, the LVNBA (the only bar association in Nevada serving the African-American legal community), is Nevada’s only affiliate chapter of the National Bar Association (NBA), which is the oldest minority bar and the largest organization of African-American attorneys in the United States. Formed in 1925, the NBA was created when the American Bar Association (ABA) was racially segregated and did not allow African-Americans to join. Although the ABA changed its policy several decades later, the NBA and its affiliates continue to address the legal issues and social, economic disparities that are unique to the African-American community.

News

The LVNBA, together with the LVNBA Foundation, is accepting applications for scholarships. The Foundation is a public charity created to encourage diversity in the legal field by providing scholarships to minority and low-income law students. Each year we grant scholarships to several Nevada law students. Scholarship information and scholarship applications are now available. The deadline for scholarship applications is September 30, 2010 (postmark).

The LVNBA is now on Linkedin!

On May 21, 2010, the LVNBA co-hosted a Meet and Greet with Judicial Candidates at the Mandarin Bar together with the Las Vegas chapters of the Asian Bar Association, the Latino Bar Association, and the South Asian Bar Association. The event was a tremendous success and over 80 people attended the Meet and Greet, inlcuding 90% of the judicial candiates!

LVNBA Members F. Travis Buchanan, Patricia Lee, and Nikkya Williams participated in Career Day at Andre Agassi Preparatory Academy on May 6, 2010. While at the academy, they staffed a table and handed out information regarding "Things You Can Do With a Law Degree" and "High School Preparation for Law School." They also answered questions relating to the law as a career to several middle and high school students. Finally, presentations were also made by LVNBA members in four elementary school classes.

The LVNBA/BALSA Mentor-Mentee Mixer took place on April 8, 2010 at the William S. Boyd School of Law.

The LVNBA held a Holiday Mixer at McCormack & Schmick's on December 17, 2009, which was attended by over 60 people. The Holiday Mixer was sponsored and co-hosted by: Richard F. Boulware, Asst. Federal Public Defender; Doreen Spears Hartwell, Lionel Sawyer & Collins; Malcolm LaVergne, LaVergne Law Group; Patricia Lee, Hutchison & Steffen; and John V. White, Dean of the William S. Boyd School of Law-UNLV.

The next general membership meeting is on Thursday, September 16, 2010 from 5:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at Lionel Sawyer & Collins, 1700 Bank of America Plaza, 300 S. Fourth Street, Las Vegas, NV 89101, host: Doreen Spears-Hartwell.

The National Bar Association will hold its Executive Board Meeting in Las Vegas on November 18-20, 2010.
